Elon Musk Announces Twitter’s Temporary Restriction on Tweet Reading

Over the weekend, Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, revealed that Twitter would be imposing temporary restrictions on the number of tweets users can read per day.

The aim of this move is to curb the utilization of Twitter’s data by artificial intelligence (AI) companies. In response to the increasing levels of data scraping and system manipulation, Twitter has implemented daily limits for both verified and non-verified accounts.

Tweet Reading Limits for Verified Accounts

Verified accounts on Twitter, typically belonging to public figures and prominent individuals, are now restricted to reading a maximum of 6,000 tweets per day. The decision to enforce this limit is intended to counter the excessive data scraping conducted by third-party platforms.

By imposing constraints on verified accounts, Twitter aims to regain control over its data and ensure a more secure and balanced user experience.

Restrictions for Non-Verified Users

Non-verified users, which constitute the majority of Twitter’s user base, now face a limit of 600 tweets per day in terms of their reading capacity. This measure is aimed at reducing the impact of data scraping by AI companies that rely on large-scale data collection from the platform.

Twitter’s decision to restrict non-verified users seeks to strike a balance between allowing access to information and safeguarding against potential misuse of its data.

Limitations for New Unverified Accounts

In an effort to address the growing concerns of data scraping, new unverified accounts on Twitter are subject to even stricter limitations. These accounts will be restricted to reading a maximum of 300 tweets per day.

By implementing this restriction, Twitter aims to discourage the rapid creation of unverified accounts solely for the purpose of data harvesting. This measure contributes to a more controlled and secure environment on the platform.

Future Adjustments and Increased Limits

Elon Musk revealed that Twitter plans to gradually increase the tweet reading limits in the near future. Verified accounts will see their limit raised to 8,000 tweets per day, while unverified accounts will have a ceiling of 800 tweets. New unverified accounts, on the other hand, will be allowed to read up to 400 tweets daily.

Although no specific timeline was provided for these adjustments, it showcases Twitter’s commitment to finding a balanced approach that addresses data scraping concerns without overly restricting user access.

AI and Social Media Platforms: A Common Challenge

Twitter is not the only social media platform grappling with the implications of the rapidly advancing AI sector. In a similar vein, Reddit recently increased prices for third-party developers accessing its data and collecting conversations from its forums.

This shift marks a departure from previous practices where social media data was often provided either for free or at a minimal cost.

The emergence of AI-powered data scraping presents a significant challenge that underscores the importance for social media platforms to carefully navigate the interplay between data accessibility, user satisfaction, and upholding the credibility of their platforms.
